Getting started
Press Get started, it's free on the home page and answer a few questions: your goal, sex, birth date, height, weight, how active you are and what you like to eat. From those, SustainBite works out your daily targets for energy and about 50 nutrients, and opens My Plan.
Planning your meals
My Plan shows a day: its meals and snacks, and every nutrient against your targets.
- Your weekly menu: SustainBite suggests a week of meals for the Diet (vegetarian or not) and Meal style you choose at the top of My Plan. Press Use this plan to keep it, or Get my grocery list to put it on your list.
- Add food: search for a food or a recipe, choose how much, and it's added to the day. Super foods lists everyday foods packed with nutrients; choose a nutrient, such as iron or calcium, to see the foods richest in it first.
- Move between days with the dates at the top.
- Print the week prints the weekly menu, each day's meals and snacks on one page.
- Climate footprint: under the weekly menu, My Plan says about how much CO2e its food takes a day and a week, from farm to plate, and each recipe's page says a serving's, and whether that's lower or higher than most of our recipes like it. The numbers are from ADEME's Agribalyse 3.2. Weeks made for you lean towards dishes with a lower footprint; your needs still come first. To turn that off, go to Settings → Preferences → Your menu.
- Your meals in your calendar (Settings → Preferences) makes a link your phone's calendar subscribes to: the week you keep with Use this plan shows there, each meal at the time you set, so the calendar reminds you. Anyone with the link can see your meals; make a new link or stop it there at any time.
Changing your plan
- To change the kind of meals, choose another Diet or Meal style on My Plan: the weekly menu changes with them. Press Use this plan to keep it.
- Once you've kept a plan, Regenerate plan makes a new week in the same style.
- A dish you never want again: press Never suggest on its recipe page, or tick it when you swap it. Weeks and swaps made for you leave it out; the recipes page still lists it, marked. Settings → Preferences → Recipes you hid lists them, each with Suggest it again.
- To change your goal, weight or activity, go to Settings → Profile. Your targets follow.
- To set a target yourself, go to Settings → Nutrient targets.
Everything is free during early access, so there's no subscription plan to change.
Your family
Open Family in the menu (on a phone, the menu button at the top).
- Invite someone with an account: enter their email address. Once they accept, you can see and plan their meals.
- Add a profile for someone without an account, like a child: enter their details, and they get targets of their own.
- In Cart, choose Me and my family to make one grocery list for everyone.
Anyone can leave a family, and you can remove a member, at any time.
Cooking with your neighbours
A cooking circle is a few households that take turns cooking dinner for each other. Start one on the Cooking circle page, pick the dinner days, and share the link with your neighbours: up to six households and twelve people at the table. Each household's needs and the foods they don't eat go into one dinner planned for everyone, and each person eats their portion. The rota says whose turn it is; anyone can take a turn or hand it on.
On My Plan, the circle's dinners are already in your week, and the rest of each day is planned around them. When it's your turn, "Add the circle dinners I cook" in the cart puts the whole dinner on your list, for everyone at the table; on the other days, that dinner isn't on your list at all. In Norway, the page shows about what each dinner's food costs and your household's share. You settle between yourselves, never through SustainBite.
A circle is a private group of people who know each other, sharing the cost of food. Selling meals from a home kitchen is a food business, with its own rules (in Norway, the Food Safety Authority's, Mattilsynet).
Sharing food with neighbours
Food nearby (in the menu) is where neighbours give away food they won't eat, free. You can offer sealed packs, whole fruit and vegetables, bread and bakery, and eggs in their box: nothing home-cooked or opened, no raw meat or fish, no alcohol. A use-by date ("siste forbruksdag") must be ahead, and the offer ends on it; a best-before date may be past for food kept at room temperature, which is often good after it, so the card says to look, smell and taste; chilled and frozen food never past a date. Fridge & pantry marks what is about to go, and "Share it" there fills the offer in.
The map shows each offer as a circle of about 300 m: nobody's door is on it. You ask for an offer with a note and when you can come; the giver picks one request, and only that person sees the exact spot and gets an email. Either of you marks it collected, and a collected offer can go straight into your Fridge & pantry. Giving food away to neighbours is private sharing, not a food business; check what you collect as you would in a shop.
Ordering from home cooks, and cooking for neighbours
Home cooks (in the menu) lists neighbours who cook dishes you order ahead and collect at their door. Each dish says what it is, what it contains, the price per portion, how many portions are left, the pickup window and when orders close. You order portions for a pickup time; the cook accepts or declines; once accepted you see exactly where to collect it and how to pay the cook directly (Vipps, MobilePay, PayPal, a bank transfer or cash). Nothing is paid through SustainBite. After pickup you can review the meal, and the kitchen's rating is the average.
To cook for neighbours, open Home cooks → Become a cook (or tick it when you sign up). Selling meals from a home kitchen is a food business: you register with Mattilsynet in Norway, or your local food authority elsewhere, and give the reference in your application, with how you handle allergens and how buyers pay you. An admin checks it and opens your kitchen; "My kitchen" then appears in the menu. Post a dish for a day with its portions, price, pickup window and cut-off; accept or decline orders; mark meals handed over. Buyers pay you directly.
Notifications, messages and the app on your phone
Settings → Notifications → "Notifications on this device" turns on push notifications in this browser or installed app: you hear at once when someone orders your dish, asks for your food, answers you or writes to you, the evening before a cooking circle dinner that is your turn, and on Sunday evening a nudge to plan your week, which has a switch of its own. Each device is turned on separately, and signing out turns it off there. On an iPhone or iPad, add SustainBite to your Home Screen first (Share → Add to Home Screen); in Chrome or Edge, "Install the app" puts it among your apps. Nothing is kept for offline use: the app always shows what the site shows.
A request on Food nearby and an order from a home cook each have a Message button: a conversation between its two people, and only them. It stays open while the request or order is, and 30 days after it closes; a new message is pushed to the other person, or emailed when nothing can be pushed. There is no inbox between strangers.
Your public profile, ratings and your impact
Settings → Preferences → "Your public profile" gives you a page neighbours see beside your offers and your kitchen: your first name, photo, a line about you, how often you gave and collected food and cooked for your circle, and the ratings neighbours gave you. It is off until you turn it on, and always on for an approved home cook, so buyers know who they order from. It never shows what you eat. Once food is collected on Food nearby, the giver and the taker can each rate the other once, within two weeks.
"Your impact" (in the menu) adds up the climate footprint of the food you saved on My Plan, week by week, and sets it against a typical SustainBite day: the middle day of our 16 weekly plans, worked out the same way from Agribalyse 3.2. A day counts once we know at least 95% of its food's weight. Below it are what you gave and collected, used up from Fridge & pantry, cooked for your circle and bought from or sold as a home cook.
Working with a nutritionist
- Find one: Find a nutritionist lists the nutritionists our team has checked.
- Share your plan: in Sharing, ask a nutritionist to look after your food diary. Once they accept, they can see your food and plan your meals. You can take access back at any time.
Becoming a nutritionist on SustainBite
Read SustainBite for nutritionists, then fill in the application. Our team checks every application; once you're approved, you're listed in Find a nutritionist and clients can share their plans with you.
Your grocery list
Open Cart:
- Add from your plan: choose the days, and the food on them goes on the list.
- Check the list: change amounts, or remove what you already have.
- Get your groceries: email the list to yourself, share or copy it, send it to the Bring! app, or order it on Instacart where that's available.
Share sends the list as text, with a link to it laid out like the email: whoever opens the link can tick things off as they shop. The link works for 90 days.
Add to the list puts anything on it: type a food or scan its barcode, or type something that isn't food, like toilet paper, and press Add. Staples you always have at home (salt, pepper, cooking oil, sugar, flour, vinegar, dried herbs and spices) are never bought; turn off any you'd rather buy, or add your own, under Always at home in Fridge & pantry.
Back from the shop, press I've done the shopping: what the week uses from home comes off your Fridge & pantry, and what the packs leave over goes in, with a rough date to use it by. The next list buys only what isn't there. Fridge & pantry also shows recipes that use what you have, and Plan next week with these makes your next week lean on it. A family shares one. You can add food you have by hand too, by searching for it or scanning it. Each food says how long it keeps in the fridge, the cupboard or the freezer, from the USDA's FoodKeeper; Freeze it gives it the freezer's time instead. A recipe's page says how long its leftovers keep.
Where the numbers come from
Foods and their nutrients come from the USDA's FoodData Central, and packaged products from Open Food Facts. To add a packaged product, press the barcode button beside the search box and point your phone's camera at its barcode, or type the number under it. Where Open Food Facts has them, the product shows its Green-Score (its effect on the environment), Nutri-Score and NOVA group (how processed it is); Norway's Keyhole isn't among them. If you live in Norway, the foods in Norway's food table, Matvaretabellen (Mattilsynet), show its numbers, and its own foods appear in search; for everyone else it fills in what the USDA doesn't measure, such as iodine.
Recipes
Browse more than 3,000 recipes in Recipes, each with its nutrients. Start cooking on a recipe's page shows one step at a time in large type and keeps your screen on; a step that names a time ("simmer for 20 minutes") offers a timer, which keeps running as you move on and beeps when it ends. You can also write your own: it stays private unless you make it public, and our team checks a public recipe before others see it.
Reports
Reports shows 7, 14 or 28 days: your average energy and nutrients against your targets, a day-by-day chart and how nutrients balance each other. Download PDF saves it as a file under the SustainBite letterhead; a report your nutritionist downloads carries their practice's. Printing the page gives the same report.
Watches and phones
Press Connect a watch on My Plan's steps card. On an iPhone, a Shortcut sends your steps and active energy from Apple Health. On Android, an app such as HC Webhook sends them from Health Connect, where Samsung, Google (Fitbit, Pixel Watch), Garmin and other watches keep them. Either way, they show on My Plan and on the Activity page.
