  • Makes: 1 serving (270 g)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Diets: Anti-Inflammatory Diet, Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian, Vegetarian, Halal, Kosher, Hindu Vegetarian
  • Contains: dairy

Ingredients

  • 150 g Water, tap
  • 100 g Milk, whole
  • 2 g LOOSE TEA
  • 5 g Sugar, white, granulated or lump
  • 5 g Ginger root, raw
  • 2 g Spices, cardamom
  • 2 g Spices, cloves, ground
  • 2 g Spices, cinnamon, ground
  • 1 g Spices, pepper, black
  • 1 g Spices, anise seed

Method

  1. Lightly crush the green cardamom pods, cloves, and black peppercorns with the back of a spoon or pestle. Grate or slice the fresh ginger.
  2. In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil over medium heat. Add the crushed cardamom, cloves, black peppercorns, cinnamon stick, star anise (if using), and grated ginger. Let the spices simmer for 2-3 minutes to infuse the water with their flavors.
  3. Stir in the black tea leaves and simmer for another 2 minutes. Adjust the brewing time based on your desired tea strength.
  4. Pour in the milk (or non-dairy alternative) and add sugar or sweetener if desired. Stir well and allow the mixture to come to a gentle boil. Simmer for 2-3 more minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the tea directly into a cup or teapot. Serve hot in a cup or mug, and enjoy your masala tea immediately.
  6. Chef's Tips Spice Adjustments: Customize the spices to your preference. For example, increase the ginger for more zest or omit the black pepper if you prefer a milder flavor. Dairy-Free Option: Use almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk for a dairy-free version. Tea Strength: If you prefer a stronger tea flavor, let the tea leaves steep for a longer time before adding milk. Sweetener Alternatives: Replace sugar with honey, jaggery, or a sugar-free alternative to suit your diet.
