  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Diets: Vegetarian, Dairy-free
  • Contains: gluten, honey

Ingredients

  • 35 g Flour, all-purpose
  • 1 g Yeast, active dry
  • 3 g Sugar
  • 0.3 g Salt
  • 85 g Water
  • 3 g Vegetable oil
  • 15 g Poppy seeds
  • 8 g Honey

Method

  1. Dissolve the yeast and sugar in 15 g of the warm water, then mix in the flour, oil and salt to a soft dough; knead for 5 minutes.
  2. Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place for 45 minutes until puffed.
  3. Pinch off small pieces of dough and roll into little balls or short ropes about the size of a thumb; place on a tray and let rise a further 15 minutes.
  4. Bake at 200 °C (400 °F) for 10-12 minutes until pale golden, then cool.
  5. Meanwhile, grind the poppy seeds well in a mortar or blender, then mix with the remaining 70 g water and the honey to make a milky liquid; strain out any coarse bits.
  6. Just before serving, pour the poppy milk over the little buns and let them soften for a few minutes; this is a traditional Lithuanian Christmas Eve (Kūčios) dish.
