  • Preparation: 25 min
  • Makes: 1 serving (171 g)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Diets: Pescatarian, Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Low carb
  • Contains: fish

Ingredients

  • 20 g Salt cod
  • 50 g Coconut, fresh
  • 30 g Onions, raw
  • 3 g Chili peppers, green, raw
  • 8 g Lime juice
  • 60 g Water

Method

  1. Soak the salt cod (standing in for dried, smoked Maldive fish) in the water for 20 minutes to soften and remove excess salt, then drain and flake it finely with your fingers, discarding any bones.
  2. Mix the flaked fish with the grated coconut in a bowl.
  3. Add the finely chopped onion and green chili, and mix well, mashing everything together with your hands or the back of a spoon until it starts to release its oils and clump slightly.
  4. Squeeze in the lime juice and mix thoroughly; taste before adding any extra salt, as the dried fish is already salty.
  5. Serve at room temperature, traditionally with warm roshi (unleavened flatbread) or toast.
