Tangyuan (Sweet Rice Balls in Soup)
One serving has 376 kcal and 6 g protein, and at least a fifth of a woman's daily need of manganese (46%), copper (36%), phosphorus (23%), selenium (23%) and thiamin (23%). Ready in 45 minutes.

- Preparation: 30 min
- Cooking: 15 min
- Makes: 1 serving (238 g)
- Difficulty: Medium
- Diets: Vegan, Gluten-free, Dairy-free
- Contains: sesame
Ingredients
- 50 g Rice flour, glutinous
- 150 g Water
- 15 g Tahini
- 20 g Sugar
- 3 g Sesame oil
Method
- Mix the sesame paste with half the sugar and the sesame oil into a firm paste; freeze for 15-20 minutes so it firms up enough to shape.
- Make a smooth, pliable dough by kneading the glutinous rice flour with about a quarter of the water, until it no longer cracks at the edges.
- Divide the dough into small pieces, flatten each into a disc, wrap it around a piece of the frozen sesame filling, and roll gently between your palms into a smooth ball.
- Bring the rest of the water to a boil with the remaining sugar to make a light sweet soup.
- Gently lower the rice balls into a separate pot of simmering water and cook until they float to the surface and turn translucent, about 5 minutes, then lift out with a slotted spoon.
- Ladle the sweet soup into a bowl, add the cooked rice balls, and serve warm; the molten filling inside is very hot, so warn anyone eating them.
