  • Cooking: 48 min
  • Makes: 1 serving (142 g)
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Diets: Vegetarian
  • Contains: dairy, gluten, nut

Ingredients

  • 45 g Phyllo dough
  • 20 g Butter, unsalted
  • 15 g Walnuts
  • 30 g Sugar
  • 30 g Water
  • 2 g Lemon juice

Method

  1. If using phyllo as a stand-in for shredded kadayıf pastry, shred it finely with a knife into thin strips (kadayıf pastry itself needs no shredding, just gentle separating with your fingers).
  2. Toss the shredded pastry with the melted butter until well coated.
  3. Press half into a small buttered baking dish, scatter the chopped walnuts on top, then cover with the rest of the pastry, pressing down firmly.
  4. Bake at 180 °C (350 °F) for 25-30 minutes until deep golden and crisp.
  5. Meanwhile, make a syrup by simmering the sugar, water and lemon juice for 8 minutes until slightly thickened; let cool slightly.
  6. Pour the warm (not hot) syrup evenly over the hot pastry as soon as it comes out of the oven, and let it soak in for at least 20 minutes before cutting into a piece and serving.
