  • Preparation: 20 min
  • Cooking: 140 min
  • Makes: 1 serving (380 g)
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Diets: High protein
  • Contains: beef, celery, dairy, fish, gluten

Ingredients

  • 160 g Beef chuck, raw
  • 40 g Onions, raw
  • 100 g Beef broth
  • 8 g Flour, all-purpose
  • 8 g Vegetable oil
  • 60 g Puff pastry
  • 0.5 g Black pepper
  • 0.4 g Salt
  • 3 g Worcestershire sauce

Method

  1. Cut the beef chuck into bite-sized chunks and toss with the flour to coat lightly.
  2. Heat the oil in a heavy pot and brown the beef in batches, then set aside.
  3. Add the chopped onion to the same pot and cook for 5 minutes until softened, then return the beef to the pot.
  4. Pour in the beef broth and the Worcestershire sauce, season generously with the black pepper and lightly with the salt, bring to a simmer, cover and cook over low heat (or in a 150 °C/300 °F oven) for 2-2.5 hours until the beef is completely tender and the gravy has thickened.
  5. Spoon the beef and gravy into a small pie dish, letting it cool slightly.
  6. Roll the puff pastry a little larger than the dish, lay it over the top, trim and crimp the edges to seal, and cut a small steam vent in the centre.
  7. Bake at 200 °C (400 °F) for 20-25 minutes until the pastry is well risen and deep golden.
  8. Rest for 5 minutes before serving, traditionally on New Year's Day.
