Ogura Toast (Nagoya Thick Toast with Butter and Sweet Red Bean Paste)
One serving has 406 kcal and 10 g protein, and at least a fifth of a woman's daily need of manganese (42%), thiamin (42%), selenium (37%), niacin (30%), copper (26%) and riboflavin (20%). Ready in 8 minutes.

- Preparation: 3 min
- Cooking: 5 min
- Makes: 1 serving (140 g)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Diets: Vegetarian
- Contains: dairy, gluten
Ingredients
- 80 g Thick-sliced white bread (shokupan)
- 10 g Butter
- 50 g Sweet red bean paste (ogura-an)
Method
- Toast a thick slice (about 3 cm, a quarter of a Japanese loaf) of soft white bread in a toaster or under the grill for 4-5 minutes, until golden outside and still soft in the middle.
- Spread it with the butter while it is hot, right to the edges, so the butter melts into the crumb.
- Spread the red bean paste thickly over the toast, or pile it on one half as Nagoya's coffee shops do, leaving the buttered half to eat alongside.
- Cut it in halves or quarters and serve at once with a cup of coffee: in Nagoya it comes with a morning coffee as part of the 'morning service', sometimes with a spoonful of whipped cream.
